Abstract

1503143 Heat-treating projectile casings RHEINMETALL GmbH and STEIGERWALD STRAHLTECHNIK GmbH 18 May 1972 [27 May 1971] 23528/72 Heading C7N [Also in Division F3] In the production of projectile casings, the casing surface is subjected to a heat treatment using an energy beam to effect changes in the structure of the material and/or the surface shape of the casing in certain places or areas over the surface of the casing to facilitate fragmentation of the casing into fragments of the desired size. The process is preferably carried out using a focused electron beam. When the material in pre-selected zones of the casing is heated above its melting point, followed by rapid cooling by self-quenching, very narrowly limited zones are created with metallurgical properties different from the remainder of the material and with fracturing characteristics ensuring the desired formation of optimum splinters. In preferred embodiments linear structural changes are produced over the casing surface in such a way that regular geometric shapes are obtained e.g. rectangles, squares, hexagons or circles. In particular, structural changes taking a linear course over the casing surface can be formed so as to constitute a cohesive network. The heat treatment usually covers a certain depth range of the casing wall. Changes in the surface shape of the projectile casing are produced by removing material from pre-selected zones. Removal of this type by the production of blind holes of a certain shape and depth may be situated, for example, both in the longitudinal and peripheral directions, in each case following one another in a row and the rows supplementing one another in raster fashion. A notch effect is thus obtained. The invention is described with particular reference to medium-calibre projectiles (20-40 mm.) such as AA shells, with reference also being made to largecalibre ammunition (100-200 mm.) and heavycalibre bombs.
