Abstract

1503110 Universal joints REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT 31 Aug 1976 [12 Sept 1975 29 June 1976] 35942/76 Heading F2U A universal joint comprises an intermediate torque transmitting ball member 5, Fig. 2, having grooves (12), 13 in planes at right angles to one another engaged by wire rings 10, 11 of two elements for connection to converging shafts as in a steering column of a motor vehicle, the axis of one ring groove at its base being shifted from that of the other so as not to intersect with one another. The rings 10, 11 may be bent from steel wire of circular, hexagonal or rectangular cross-section, the latter being suitable for square-section grooves 112, 113 of Fig. 3. A thinned portion 16 assists the bending operation. The ball member 5 or 105 may be moulded from thermoplastics, the groove axes being shifted by a distance d so that the grooves vary in depth. In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 (not shown) the material of the ball member is cut away to provide resilient portions for taking up diametrical play, thin walls (22 to 25) for defining the grooves and a pair of fingers (26 to 29) for resiliently retaining the rings in the grooves. In Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) the centre of the ball member is provided with a spring (151) which may be made of a cylinder of cellulose plastics or of wire for pushing against the interior surfaces (152, 153) of the two rings (101, 102).
