Abstract

1503073 Alpha-alumina CHEMOKOMPLEX VEGYIPARI GEP ES BERENDEZES EXPORT-IMPORT VALLALAT 2 Feb 1976 [3 Feb 1975] 03970/76 Heading C1A Alpha-alumina is made by activating aluminium of at least 99À5% purity by stripping its oxide layer in an aqueous medium of acidic pH, washing in an aqueous medium of neutral pH and reacting the activated aluminium in an aqueous medium of alkaline, neutral or acidic pH to give hydrated alumina which is subsequently ignited to form the alumina product. The aluminium starting material is preferably of at least 8 cm.<SP>2</SP>/g. surface area and is activated at pH 5-6. The activated and washed metal is then transformed to hydrated alumina in the presence of water. In the examples this hydrated alumina is heated at various temperatures to obtain gamma alumina, mixtures of gamma and alpha alumina, or alpha alumina depending on the temperature of ignition.
