Abstract

1500967 Crash restraint bags NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd and IKEDA BUSSAN CO Ltd 12 June 1975 [28 June 1974 2 July 1974] 25190/75 Heading B7B An inflatable crash bag 46 when expanded has a generally tetrahedral configuration of four substantially ososceles triangular sheet portions 48, 50, 52 and 54 which are circumscribed by five edges 26, 56, 58, 60 and 62 at which the sheet portions are integral with one another and one edge 44 along which two sheet portions 52 and 54 are hermetically joined together. The triangular sheet portions are regular and congruent with each other. An opening 32 is formed in the vicinity of one vertex of the bag 46, such as by removal of the vertex C, and is surrounded by holes 34 for fixing of the bag on a steering wheel hub 66, Fig. 4, or on a dashboard (76), Fig. 8 (not shown), with an explosive inflation device 68 accommodated in the opening 32. To produce the crash bag 46, a flat bag 20, Fig. 2, is initially formed of two superimposed rectangular sheet portions 22, 22<SP>1</SP> which are joined integrally at three edges 24, 24<SP>1</SP>, 26 and open at one edge 28 defining free margins 30, 30<SP>1</SP>. As shown, the flat bag 20 is made by cutting an elongate blank 36 alongside two lateral seams 40. The mid-points M, M<SP>1</SP> of the margins 30, 30<SP>1</SP> are then taken and moved away from one another in directions S, S<SP>1</SP> until the halves of each of the bisected free margins meet each other to be hermetically joined forming the edge 44.
