Abstract

1500790 Production of uranium dioxide EXXON NUCLEAR CO Inc 18 July 1975 30243/75 Heading C1A Sinterable UO 2 is made by contacting a fluidized bed of uranyl fluoride solids at a temperature of 730‹-780‹ C. countercurrently with excess steam to convert said uranyl fluoride to U 3 O 8 and thereafter fluidizing the U 3 O 8 at 450-500‹ C. while countercurrently contacting the bed with excess H 2 in the presence of steam to form UO 2 . The fluidized bed of UOF 2 solids may be established by introducing UF 6 (14) and steam into a bed of seed particles of UOF 2 solids (1) at a temperature of 658-780‹ C. The solids formed are passed to a second bed 1a maintained at 730-780‹ C. preferably 750-760‹ C. and excess steam 15 is passed through the bed. U 3 O 8 formed is passed to a second fluidized bed 2 where it is fluidized at a temperature of 450-500‹ C. with excess H 2 and steam, the ratio of H 2 to U 3 O 8 preferably being 2À5-3:1 and the ratio of H 2 to steam preferably being in the range 1À5-2:1. In another embodiment a single bed of UOF 2 seed crystals is employed at a temperature of 730-780‹ C. and the excess steam is used to convert UOF 2 formed to U 3 O 8 . In either event, the mole ratio of steam UF 6 introduced is preferably in the range 5-10:1.
