Abstract
1500776 Turbomachine blades ROLLSROYCE Ltd 8 April 1976 [11 April 1975] 14902/75 Heading FIT An aerofoil structure, e.g. a ducted fan blade, comprises a main body 19 formed from layers of fibre reinforced composite material bonded together and attached by fastening means 19a extending transversely of the fibres, a strengthening member 20 being secured adjacent the leading edge by an over-lying skin 21 attached to body 19 by stitching or stapling 22. The fibre reinforcement may be of carbon fibres in a resin matrix, whereas member 20 is a steel rod and skin 21 a sheet of titanium or stainless steel having an undulating trailing edge 21a to avoid stress concentrations. Fastening means 19a may be fibre inserts, metal pins or staples, which may be notched to increase the bond with the resin matrix. Steel wire may be used for stitches 22. Blade root 23 has an insert 24 of glass reinforced plastics.
