Abstract

1500260 Making extracts from solids D E J INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH CO BV 4 March 1975 [7 March 1974] 10197/74 Heading B1Q A continuous process for the countercurrent extraction of particulate material comprises serially spacing the material in an extraction apparatus and causing the portions to progress simultaneously through the apparatus in a series of steps, each step for each portion comprising the following phases: (a) a packaging phase in which the portion is formed into a packed bed; (b) an extraction phase in which liquid is passed through the bed for a predetermined period; (c) a phase in which at least part of the packed bed is broken up; and (d) a phase in which the material of the broken up bed is moved over a predetermined distance nearer to the outlet to be repacked as in (a). In Fig. 1A showing the beginning of the cycle, packed beds 15 of particles rest on perforated discs 14 attached to shaft 13 and provided with radial slots and scraper knives. Between the beds are layers of extract 16. The shaft is rotated to move downwards so that the extract layers 16 move to above the discs (B). On further downward movement, the beds are peeled by the knives and the peeled off particles are deposited on top of the discs where they mix with the extract (C). The shaft is then raised without rotation, the extract compresses the beds and is forced through the discs, new extract layers being formed under the discs (D and E). Examples and other drawings illustrate the process applied to the extraction of coffee and the separation and washing of ice from a slurry of ice and saccharose solution.
