1499896 Refuse compactors GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 May 1975 [5 June 1974] 21281/75 Heading B8C A refuse compactor 10 comprises a frame 14, a compacting chamber 15 within the frame 14, an access opening to the chamber 15, a compacting pressure plate 34 with a drive motor 22, and a control circuit for the motor 22, including switch means 64 for controlling the motor 22, which switch means 64 is actuated by movement of a pivotable shelf member 26. The shelf member 26 is pivoted to the frame 14 at 30 and to a foldable wall 24 comprising pivotable sections 48, 60, springs 62 being provided to urge the wall 24 to the unfolded condition, and the member 26 downwardly from the horizontal. In operation, the motor 22 is actuated to drive the plate 34 downwardly. A bumper 42 on the member 26 follows the plate 34, allowing the member 26 to pivot downwardly and a member 54 is moved relative to the section 48 by impingement against the section 60 to actuate a deodorizing spray can 44. After the compacting stroke, the plate 34 rises, the member 26 being raised until a lever 68 of the switch means 64 engages a top wall 16, causing the power to the motor 22 to be cut off and engagement of a lever 66 with the wall 16 reverses the control circuitry in preparation for a subsequent compacting cycle. If refuse should accidentally become lodged on top of the plate 34 it will engage and raise the member 26 during the upstroke, causing the lever 68 to be actuated to stop the motor 22 before damage can occur.
