Abstract

1499844 Making gramophone record bags; cutting out ROBERT STAGE & CO Ltd 5 March 1976 [20 March 1975] 11538/75 Headings B5D and B4B A method of making bags for gramophone records comprises cutting-out substantially triangular portions which may have curved or straight sides, from the edge regions of a web 10, transversely cutting the web 10 into sections so that said cut-outs are located at the middle of opposed edges of each section, folding each section along a line extending between the cutouts therein and securing the folded sections along said opposed edges to form open bags. The sections may include side flaps which are adhered to opposed portions of the sections to form the open bags. The abovementioned web which may be of paper, may be combined with a plastics lining web 22 prior to being cut. The plastics lining is transparent or translucent. A machine for performing the method comprises a plough unit 7 and a roller 6 having turnover treads for turning in and creasing the longitudinal edge regions of the web 10. A turn-back plate 11 then folds the longitudinal edge regions back to their original condition so that a cutting unit 12 may remove portions of said edge regions to produce the side flaps. If the side flaps are to be on the inside of the finished bags, the web is then passed through a plough unit 13 which turns in the side flaps so that they receive gum from an applicator roller 17 which may also applies gum to other portions of the web to secure the lining web 22 thereto. Centre holes may be punched in the web 10 before it is combined with the lining web 22 by a pair of punch rollers 21. The cut-outs may be formed in the longitudinal edges of the web. by knife blades provided on a transverse cutting roller 41 or, if the bags are to be unlined, in the cutting unit 12 or on one of the punch rollers 21. The transverse cutting roller 41 may include a pair of curved cutting blades 45, 46 or a cutting blade (49) Fig. 5 (not shown) having curved bifurcated ends (50) Fig. 5 (not shown). The bag forming sections are folded as described above by suction folding rollers 33, 34 and, if the side flaps are to be located on the outside of the finished bags, turn-over ploughs 38 for the side flaps are provided in the region of rollers 36. The completed bags are stacked by delivery discs 37.
