Abstract

1499807 Leg prosthesis or calliper of composite material SOCIAL SERVICES SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 8 April 1975 [12 Jan 1974 13 Aug 1974] 01551/74 and 35653/74 Heading A5R An orthotic or prosthetic device such as an artificial limb, limb extension or calipers, is made from a composite or a ductile material and a curable or thermosetting fibre reinforced plastics material. The ductile material may be aluminium or aluminium alloy and may be in the form of a sheath surrounding, a fibre reinforced plastics resin core. Alternatively the aluminium may be in the form of an I-bar whose channels are filled with the resin, the whole being surrounded by a heat-shrink thermoplastic sheath. The resin may be reinforced with carbon fibres. After initial fitting of the device to the patient the ductile material is shaped and the resin is cured.
