Abstract

1499398 Chain-shift change-speed gear L C H JUY 5 June 1975 [17 June 1974] 24339/75 Heading F2D In a derailleur type gear for bicycles shifting of the chain M in the direction towards a larger rear-wheel sprocket is assisted by an arcuate extension la formed integrally with or attached to one of the two side plates 1, J, which, together with at least one jockey sprocket K, constitute an assembly pivotally carried by a bracket H of a parallelogram linkage E, F, G, H. The extension 1a, which has a chamfer 1c of flat, as shown, or slightly convex profile, is disposed as close as possible to the sprockets B<SP>1</SP> ... B<SP>4</SP> consistent with clearing the largest sprocket B<SP>1</SP> and is of sufficient extent to engage two rivets of the chain in any angular position of the assembly 1, J about its pivotal connection with the bracket H. The plate 1 may be made of metal or other suitable material by moulding, stamping, &c. When the plate is of metal the part on which the chamfer is formed may be surface hardened or coated with a plastics material, or the entire plate may be so coated. In a modification, the part with the chamfer 2c, Fig. 9, is formed as a separate element, e.g. of plastics material, and assembled to the plate N so that a groove 2d receives a rim N<SP>2</SP> of the plate and a hole 2h receives a bolt L which passes through the plate N, carries a jockey sprocket K, and connects with the other plate J. The separate chamfered part may alternatively be of bifurcated form to straddle the plate N to which it is secured by snap fittings or rivets, or it may consist of two half portions assembled to opposite sides of the plate.
