1499324 Phenyl acetic acid and -ethanol derivatives FISONS Ltd 18 March 1975 [22 March 1974] 27142/77 Divided out of 1499323 Heading C2C Novel compounds of the Formula I in which A 1 and A 2 are the pairs of groups -COCHR 3 COR a and -OH, and -OH, and -COCH 2 R 3 and -OH respectively, Ra is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or phenyl, R 3 , R 5 , R 7 and R 8 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, hydroxy, alkenyl or phenyl, Rx is alkyl, Ry and Rz are both hydrogen or together are a carbonyl oxygen atom, and R is hydrogen or an alcoholic residue when Ry and Rz together are a carbonyl oxygen, and R is hydrogen when Ry and Rz are both hydrogen, may be prepared (a) when A 1 and A 2 are the pairs of groups -COCHR 3 CORa and OH, by reacting a compound IV with ROOC-Ra, (b) when A 1 and A 2 are the pairs of groups -COCHR 3 and -OH, by reacting a compound VI under Friedel-Crafts conditions with and where necessary hydrolysing the resulting product to remove the ether methyl group, or (c) when A 1 and A 2 are the pairs of groups -COCR 3 = CHRa and -OH, by the process (b) above using compound VI and The starting materials are prepared as disclosed in the parent Specification, where the use of the compounds of the invention to prepare pharmaceutical active compounds is disclosed and claimed.
