Abstract

1499265 Detection of micro organisms INTERTECHNIQUE (SA) 19 March 1976 11234/76 Heading G1B [Also in Division C6] A device for detecting microbial infections e.g. the presence and gravity of a urinary tract infection, consists of a plastics strip 11, Figs. 2 and 3, prolonged by a gripping means 16 and formed on both sides with cells 17, 18 filled with solid culture medium. In the larger cell 17 used for counting purposes, the medium may be one designed to inhibit the growth of all Gram-positive microorganisms. Of the nine smaller cells 18, three areas can be provided for identification purposes e.g. detecting indole-acetic acid developing, lactose positive and negative reacting, and deaminase producing bacteria, and six areas for preparing antibiograms using e.g. ampicillin, nalidixic acid and sulphonamides in two concentrations viz a normal concentration for use in human therapy and the maximum tolerated concentration, respectively. In another embodiment, the plastics strip consists of 3 or 4 rectangular flaps 1, 2, Fig. 1, extending from a core, the flaps being regularly distributed around the core and having cells in each of their two sides. The transfer bottle 4 including the mounted plastics flaps may be fitted prior to use, within a larger bottle 5 for urine collection.
