Abstract
1499221 Preparation of chlorosulphonylbenzoyl chlorides IHARA CHEMICAL INDUSTRY CO Ltd 14 April 1976 [19 Nov 1975] 15298/76 Heading C2C A chlorosulphonylbenzoyl chloride of the formula wherein X is H, halogen or NO 2 , is obtained by reacting more than a stoichiometric amount of phosgene with a compound of the formula or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof in the presence of dimethylformamide as co-reactant, optionally in the presence of an inert organic solvent. Dichlorotolyl sultones of the formula are also obtained in the above reaction as byproducts. o-Sulphobenzimide may be obtained by treating a reaction mixture containing o-chlorosulphonylbenzoyl chloride and dichlorotolylsultone with an alcohol, reacting the resulting mixture of the ester of o-chlorosulphonyl benzoic acid and dichlorotolylsultone with NH 3 to give the ammonium salt of o-sulphobenzimide and hydrolysing this salt with a mineral acid.
