Abstract
1498951 Teaching chemistry P OH CHOW HUN 9 Jan 1975 [10 Jan 1974] 1262/74 Heading G5G An aid for teaching chemistry comprises a set of individual blocks, e.g. of plastics material, each representing an ion, some of the blocks being marked with chemical symbols representing cations and some being marked with chemical symbols representing anions, the valency of each ion being represented by a corresponding number of projections only or recesses only on each of a plurality of surfaces of the respective block, the projections being complementary with the recesses so that blocks of opposite valency may be interconnected to represent chemical compounds. As shown, two blocks representing the cations of sodium which has a valency of plus one represented by one projection on each of four surfaces of a block are plugged into a single block representing the carbonate anion which has a valency of minus two represented by two recesses in each of four surfaces of the block, the combination thus modelling sodium carbonate. The blocks may be marked with information indicating the related atomic number and/or atomic weight and/or electronic structure. The set may comprise 28 blocks.
