Abstract
1498465 Gas opacimeter ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 30 April 1975 [28 May 1974] 17903/75 Heading G1A A gas opacimeter comprises means for passing a light beam through a gas chamber 10 via entrance and exit holes 15 and 16 with shutters 40, 41 displaceable to at least partly open the holes, and notatable discs 21, 22, of which 21 interrupts the light beam. The exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine is connected to inlet 13. Pump 12 supplies pure air to comparison chamber 11. The discs rotate in a direction corresponding to the gas flow, and are so close to openings 15, 16, 19, 20 that a laminar boundary gas layer appears on their surfaces. A resistance wire for measuring temperature extends the length of chamber 10. Baffles 2 and 4 are for uniform gas distribution, Interference filter 28, focusing lenses 29, 33 polarization filter 30 and apertured diaphragms 34 are arranged in the beams. A filter with a narrow ultraviolet pass range is used with white light source 25. Opaque, 31, and translucent, 32, sectors on disc 21 are respectively oposite openings 15 and 19 simultaneously and vice versa. Light conductors 35, 36 lead to sensor 37 of colour sensitivity corresponding to the human eye. An indication of opacity is derived from the difference of the signals due to chambers 10 and 11. Holes 15, 16 are open only when measuring to avoid dirt deposit on discs 21, 22. Shutters 40, 41, which are displaced perpendicularly to the gas flow by an electromagnet may be set to partly close the holes to simulate specific opacities.
