Abstract
1498397 Switching systems for power supplies MULLARD Ltd 17 Sept 1976 38563/76 Heading H2H A circuit for supplying power to a load L comprises a semi-conductor switch T, a generator I 1 for supplying trigger current to the switch and a control circuit for turning the trigger current generator on and off, the control circuit including a comparator COMP for comparing two control voltages Vc, Rr, a detector DET responsive to the voltage across the switch and a gate G1. The control voltage Vc is a variable D.C. reference voltage derived from a potentiometer Rc supplied with a voltage -V from a source 200. A generator 100 supplies the control voltage Vr which is a ramp waveform at twice the frequency of the mains A.C. supply connected to terminals 1, 2. In each half cycle of the mains supply waveform, when the ramp voltage Vr falls below the voltage Vc the comparator turns on the trigger current generator which causes the switch T to conduct. The switch may be a triac or a thyristor and when the voltage across it falls below a predetermined value which is close to zero volts, the detector DET causes the NAND gate G1 to disable the comparator. The trigger current pulse supplied to the switch T is therefore terminated to prevent consumption of energy dua to the unnecessary continuation of the supply of the trigger pulse. The source 200 disables the gate G1 to prevent triggering of the switch T if the voltage -V falls below a predetermined value. The load may be resistive, capacitive or inductive and may be a heating resistor in which case the voltage Vr is a temperature dependent D.C. voltage which is compared with the voltage Vc to provide thermostatic control. By modifying the generator 100 to provide a voltage Vr having a low frequency for example one thousandth that of the A.C. source burst firing control of the switch T may be provided. The transistor circuits constituting the components 100, 200, DET and COMP are described in detail, the ramp generator including a transistor circuit which detects the zero crossing region of the A.C. supply to enable charging of a capacitor for generating the rising portion of the ramp waveform.
