Abstract

1498026 Direction finders ELLIOTT BROS (LONDON) Ltd 4 Dec 1974 [14 March 1974] 11481/74 Heading H4D The Specification describes a homing indicator receiver arrangement associated with a communications receiver which may be V.H.F., F.M. for use on, e.g. an aircraft, wherein the homing indicator RF and IF circuits are synchronized to the separate communications receiver RF and IF circuits using common local oscillators to drive the respective frequency changing circuits therein, the output from the homing indicator receiver being fed at IF to a mixer which acts as a synchronized detector and produces an output signal which is fed to a known homing indicator. The D.C. output from an AGC detector connected to the input of synchronous mixer is connected to one input of a D.C. comparator circuit along with the D.C. output signal of said mixer so that an output is produced to actuate an alarm circuit on detection of, e.g. lack of equality between these signals which would occur on the homing indicator receiver receiving a communications signal different to that received in the communications channel due to, for example a defect in the homing channel circuitry. As described, the communications receiver is connected to high gain antenna 1. Dipoles 5, 6, located symmetrically on the aircraft to have differing radiation patterns are connected alternately at low frequency by switch 7 to homing receiver 8. Mixing circuit 10, comprising two mixers which are switched in quadrature and have outputs full wave rectified and summed to define the phase of the low frequency homing signal, produces an output which is filtered at 12 at the switching frequency and applied to homing indicator 13 which may be a meter or an aural device. In another embodiment, the arrangement may receive A.M. communication signals. The arrangement allows the wider bandwidth required for homing detection to be provided while the narrower bandwidth of the communications receiver is retained.
