Abstract

1497921 Vapourizers ETHYL CORP 29 Jan 1975 [6 Feb 1974 20 Aug 1974 (2)] 3874/75 Heading F1B A fuel induction system, for an IC engine, comprises an intake manifold, a carburetter having at least one primary barrel which, in use, forms a primary air/fuel mixture and is connected by a first passage to an inlet of an enclosed exhaust gas heated evaporation chamber, the flow cross-section of which is larger than the inlet cross-section, the chamber being located separately from the inlet manifold and having an outlet connected by a second passage to the inlet manifold, the carburetter also having at least one secondary barrel which is connected to and adapted to deliver a supplemental air/fuel mixture to the inlet manifold during periods of high engine load when the system is in use. Fig. 1 shows a V-engine, the exhaust ports of which are connected by a crossover 1 and in which a valve 10 is provided in exhaust passage 7 to direct all the exhaust gas through pipe 8. A car- 'buretter having a primary barrel in which a choke valve 17 and throttle valve 18 are provided, is mounted on the crossover, and supplies mixture to sheet metal evaporation chamber 21. Outlets 30 and 31 lead to branches 34 and 35 of the intake manifold, each branch supplying one bank of cylinders. When the engine is started from cold, valve 10 is closed and the rapid heating of the chamber causes vapourization of liquid droplets in the airfuel mixture. Fig. 3 shows a carburetter having a primary barrel 42 and secondary barrels 43 and 44 which are positioned so that the air-fuel mixture flow from the secondary barrels impinges directly on the flows of mixture leaving the evaporation chamber by the outlets 60 and 61. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a carburetter having a primary barrel and one secondary barrel feeding an in-line engine. Details are given of a test carried out on a V-type engine, which show that the difference between the air-fuel ratio of the mixtures actually received by the individual cylinders, did not exceed 0À5. Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown) relate to the installation on a V-type engine of a carburetter having two primary barrels and two secondary barrels. Figs. 9 and 10 relate to the use of a sheet metal box which forms the evaporation chamber and is installed in an aperture in the exhaust pipe wall. Carburetter 113 supplies mixture through inlet 116 to chamber 118 which has an outlet 125 leading to inlet manifold 127. Flange 141 is sealed to the exhaust pipe wall. The main exhaust passage 136 is provided with a valve 134 which is linked to valve 135 in by-pass passage 133. Fig. 11 (not shown) shows a construction without the by-pass and valves but having a carburetter with a secondary barrel, the outlet end of which is directed towards the outlet opening from the evaporation chamber.
