Abstract

1497879 Reducing drag of bluff vehicles SYSTEMS SCIENCE & SOFTWARE 25 March 1975 [1 April 1974 10 March 1975] 12434/75 Heading F2R [Also in Division B7] In order to reduce drag on a vehicle having a bluff forward face 18 by reducing separation along the longitudinal top and side surfaces 22, 20, Fig. 1, of the vehicle, elongate vanes 34, Fig. 2, are provided adjacent the horizontal and vertical edges of the bluff face, the vanes defining converging passages for air moving radially off the bluff face and accelerate and direct this air along the side and top surfaces of the vehicle. Guide elements 32 attached to the edges combine with the vanes to define the converging passages. The guide element 32 is curved but may alternatively be angled, Fig. 5 (not shown). The vane may be a curved plate as shown, or alternatively, may have an aerofoil section, Fig. 7 (not shown). The vanes may have releasable fasteners (148), Fig. 6 (not shown), for engagement in slots (128) at the corner edges of cargo containers.
