Abstract

1497622 Change-speed gear CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 15 July 1976 [10 Dec 1975] 29553/76 Heading F2D A planetary transmission comprises first and second trains 16, 18 with a ring gear 16R driven from an input shaft 64 through gearing 58, 70 and a torque converter 60 with lock-up clutch 65, suns 16S, 18S constrained to rotate together and controlled by a brake 24, a planet carrier 20 common to both trains and connected to a driven shaft 32, a clutch 28 between the carrier and ring gear 16R, and a ring gear 18R controlled by a brake 26. The. train 16 has single planets 16P between its sum and ring gear and the train 18 has intermediate planets 18X, 18P, the arrangement providing a low ratio with split torque between the two trains when the brake 26 is applied, a higher ratio through the train 16 when the brake 24 is applied, and direct drive on engagement of the clutch 28. The figure shows the transmission combined with a further three-range planetary unit 30 and a planetary reversing unit 50, the final output shaft 48 being connected to a carrier 46 of the unit 30 and to the carrier 56 of the reversing unit. Application of a brake 44 establishes low range through a train 36, application of a brake 38 establishes a middle range through trains 34, 36, and engagement of a lock-up clutch 40 gives direct drive. The Specification describes a sequence of operation of the brakes 24, 26, 38, 44 and clutches 28, 40 to provide seven forward ratios, and indicates that appropriate proportioning of the elements of the planetary trains 16, 18, 34, 36 enables a substantially uniform step ratio between adjacent forward ratios to be obtained. Reverse is established by engagement of the clutch 28 and a brake 54. A constructional form of the transmission is described.
