Abstract

149,731. Samuelson, G. B., and Glaser, W. H. May 13, 1919. Slipping vehicles.-In an electric railway system a uniformly-moving train is arranged to overtake a coach starting in front of it and slip the rear coach on approaching a station. Fig. 1 shows a train composed of coaches 41, 44, with a coach 45 which has just been slipped, the train approaching a coach 40 which is starting from the station 11. On each coach, the front buffers 53, Fig. 4, are connected through rod 63<a> and a lost-motion device 62<a> and rod 61 to a switch device 56 which in turn is connected by a rod 57, lever 58 and roller 59 to a cam 60 on the rear buffers 54. The bogey pins are shown at 66<a> and 68. The rod 57 is connected by a lever 203 and rod 202 to a bellcrank lever 201 in engagement with a star-wheel 200, so that the star-wheel is depressed when the rear buffers are out. This star-wheel is engaged by strikers on the track and has six arms, on four of which are pins which operate the coupling- switch, so that this switch is actuated by the first two of every three strikers to place the coupling into attached or slip positions. Fig. 13 shows the connexions of the coach 40. The switch 123 is coupled to a reversing switch 130 which governs the electro-magnetic coupling 131, the switch 130 being operated by the star-wheel 200. When the coach is slipped, the connexions revert to the position shown in Fig. 13, except that the switches 123, 130, and the corresponding magnet poles are in reversed position, being re-set by a striker 144. Fig. 1, at the station. Specification 149,430 [Class 57, Governors &c.], is referred to.
