Abstract

1497073 Hydraulic boosters GIRLING Ltd 7 May 1975 [21 May 1974] 22515/74 Heading F2F A by-pass valve 36 is separate from a control valve 18 in the housing 2 of an hydraulic booster with a booster piston 1 subject to boost pressure in a chamber 6 controlled by the valve 18 which is movable by an input member 7 through a lever 14 between open and closed positions in which the chamber 6 selectively communicates with a pressure fluid inlet 24 or through an outlet 25 with a reservoir 29, and the by-pass 36 is provided for connecting the pressure inlet 24 to an outlet 34 for a power steering valve 35. The valve 36 comprises a member 37 which is opened by pump pressure acting against a spring 40 and is moved leftwards by boost pressure in the chamber 6 to obstruct the passage to the steering valve and hence increase the pump and boost pressure. The control valve spool is actuated by a lever 14 which passes through slots 12, 13 in extensions of the input member 7 and in the boost piston 1 and engages at its ends with an abutment 16 of the boost piston 1 and a slot 33 of the spool 18 which is urged by a spring 21 against the lever. A pressure accumulator 44 may be provided to supply pressure fluid through a valve 47 on the spool 18 in case of pump failure and the input from the pump may be supplied through a modified by-pass valve 36, with a closure element 50 operative on pump failure, to the booster inlet 24 and the steering outlet 34.
