Abstract
1496464 Coating and flame drying hollow cylinders SUN CHEMICAL CORP 14 April 1976 18 Feb 1976] 15231/76 Heading B2L A system for decorating/coating hollow cylindrical objects, e.g. cans, comprises means to supply cans 21 to a discharge region, means 22 for moving the objects into contact with an applicator of thermally settable coating medium 23, a continuously moving pin chain conveyor 31 for conveying objects 21 from the coating station via transfer means 28, said chain conveyer being disposed in a generally vertical plane, a flame drying oven 60 comprising an elongated chamber having gas burners therein located relative to conveyor 31 such that an open gas flame jet impinges on objects 21, the arrangement being such that after coating the material on the cans flows to an even, ridge free, layer before the cans are exposed to the flame, such exposure being for less than 3 seconds but long enough to thermally cure the coating. A plurality of coating sources 24 to 27 may supply coater 23. The pin chain conveyor may havea wire brush or resilient finger arrangement adapted to hold a can from inside, and the can may be rotated; alternatively the whole conveyor may be at some 10 to the vertical, the pins accordingly being at 10 above the horizontal, thus preventing cans from falling off. The oven may have burner heads above and below the line of the conveyor, as shown at 61 to 69 and 71 to 79; further burners may act on the base of the cans. Alternatively, burners may be above only, with heat deflector plates below the cans, or a single elongate burner at a small angle to the path of the cans may be situated below the cans; the furnace may turn through 90 so as to allow different parts of the can to be flametreated. The cans proceed from oven 60 via cooler 90 to station 92 where they are transferred to store, or further processing.
