Abstract

1496340 Water cooled pipes STEIN ATKINSON STORDY Ltd 20 Dec 1974 55161/74 Heading F2P A method of insulating a metal water cooled pipe comprises securing a plurality of studs 2 around the circumferential surface of the pipe along a helical path, winding at least one layer of ceramic fibre 3 helically around the pipe except for the stud portions and applying a layer of refractory material 4 over the fibre and the studs to anchor the latter within the material. The fibre may be wound in a wet condition or wound dry and wetted prior to application of the material. The material must be applied before the fibre dries. The studs are Y-shaped and they may be similarly oriented, as shown, or randomly disposed. The refractory material 4 may be air or heat settable material such as insulating, castable or plastics refractory material.
