Abstract

1496245 Noughts and crosses B J BARISH 7 July 1975 28551/75 Heading A6H [Also in Divisions B2 G5 and H1] A switching device (see Division H1) based on the principle of the "magic", or self-erasing, slate is adapted to provide an electronic noughts and crosses game. A base 308 in the form of a printed-circuit board is divided into nine boxes A to I each having a central conductive element 310x and a radially-spaced element 310o therein with respective leads 311x, 311o. Overlying this board 308 is a flexible plastics sheet 316 having a conductive metal layer 318 in turn coated with a wax layer 314. The whole is covered by an opaque flexible plastics sheet 320 marked with the conventional lines 321 and 323 and also having X and O indications, 325x and 325o respectively as a guide for marking with a stylus whereby the conductive layer 318 is pressed into contact with an element 310x or 310o, the layer 314 being pressure-flowable and also tacky to maintain the electrical contact after the stylus has been removed. A circuit (Figure 19, not shown) is described which provides an indication when three elements 310x in any horizontal row, vertical column or diagonal are all connected to layer 318; it also gives an indication in similar circumstances with respect to elements 310o. The circuit also provides an indication if both elements 310x and 310o in any one box are actuated. Hence, besides indicating an "X" win or an "O" win, the circuit shows if a player places his mark in a box previously marked by the other player, and therefore loses. Thus an element of memory, not present in conventional sessions of the game, is introduced. After a game has been completed it is only necessary to separate the flexible sheet 316 with its conductive layer 318 from the board 308 to clear the device in readiness for another game.
