Abstract

1496224 Aqueous colloidal dispersions DOW CHEMICAL CO 14 April 1975 15271/75 Heading C3P An aqueous colloidal dispersion having a pH of 2 to 12 comprises particles of a waterinsoluble organic polymer which is electrically non-conductive in the dry state, the particles having a size of 500Š to 10,000Š and being stabilized by cationic groups chemically bonded to the polymer and/or in the form of adsorbed emulsifier at least 50% of said groups being isothiouronium groups in which the nitrogen atoms have covalent bonds to carbon only. Some of the cationic groups may be sulphonium cations. The "isothiouronium" emulsifier may be present during the preparation of the copolymer or added to a dispersion of the preformed polymer. In the examples n-butyl acrylate and styrene are co-polymerized in the presence of 5 - p - dodecylbenzyl - N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>- tetramethylisothiouronium chloride (A), methylmethacrylate and ethyl acrylate are copolymerized in the presence of A and vinylbenzyltetramethylisothiouronium chloride (B), styrene and butadiene are copolymerized in the presence of (B) and (A) is added to the product; and a colloidal dispersion is formed by combining polybutadiene, (A) and water.
