Abstract

1496175 Audio visual apparatus RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 6 May 1976 [13 May 1975 21 Aug 1975] 20137/75 and 34760/75 Heading G2E A sound film apparatus can accommodate films of two different gauges, and has an optical sound head for each gauge close to the drive capstan, each head comprising a light source and a light sensitive detector, at least one component of one head being located within an annular groove in the capstan. The arrangement is shown in Fig.1 set up as a projector for 16 mm film, and in Fig.2 for 35 mm film, the film in the latter case being looped additionally round a further roller 1 because of the increased picture-sound spacing. The film passes round a drive capstan 2, which has disposed closely adjacent thereto two optical sound heads and a magnetic sound head. The optical head for 35 mm film consists of a light source 7 and a photo-cell 7', and that for 16 mm film consists of a light source 6 and photo-cell 6'. Normally the film overhangs the capstan so that access can be obtained to both sides of the film. If the same capstan is used for both films, the 16 mm film will not overhang. In this case the photo-cell 6' is located in a holder 10 which fits into a groove in the capstan. The photo-cell 7' for the 35 mm sound head may also be located in a similar groove, although this is not absolutely necessary. The 16 mm set-up can also make use of a magnetic sound head 8.
