Abstract
1496151 Testing cables TELEPHONE CABLES Ltd 16 Jan 1975 [16 Jan 1974] 01991/74 Heading G1U A cable testing system of the type in which the output of a sweep generator 1, Fig.1, is pulse modulated 3, and the resulting bursts of oscillations are passed 4 to a cable 2 under test, is characterized in that the power 10 in the reflected signals is averaged 12 over successive periods of duration T corresponding to the time for the sweep generator to rise through a frequency of #f (#f = 1Mc/s as described), and successive averages are themselves averaged 14 in groups of n (n = 10 as described) so as to provide a sequence of moving averages each occurring following a change of #f in the sweep generator and being evaluated over the immediately preceeding n. #f sweep of the generator. The moving averages can be displayed or stored 20. Control of the averaging processes is by a clockpulse generator 16 (see Fig. 3 not shown, for details) which derives one clockpulse from the output of the sweep generator each time it passes through a harmonic of a 1Mc/s beat oscillator. The resulting clockpulses, of period T, are used to control an integrator 22 and a variable gain amplifier 26 (Fig. 3), and also, via a counter 32, the transmission of successive 1Mc/s averages to capacitor stores 28, the signals on which are further averaged, by an operational amplifier 34, to provide the required moving averages.
