Abstract

1496097 Cams; toothed gearing S SHINOHARA and H MAKINO 9 July 1976 [22 July 1975] 28623/76 Headings F2K and F2Q A stepping mechanism comprises three cam plates 2, 3, 4 fast on a rotatable input shaft 1 and adapted to engage and drive roller followers 7, 8, 9 equispaced on carrier pins of the plates 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4 of a spider assembly formed on an output shaft 5, the arrangement effecting intermittent drive to the output shaft 5. The intermittent dwell period may be varied according to the profiles of the cam plates 2, 3, 4. As shown, 270 degrees rotation of the input shaft 1 effects 360 degrees rotation of the output shaft 5 which then remains stationary during the remaining 90 degrees dwell rotation of one complete revolution of the input shaft 1, whereby the output shaft 5 is displaced one revolution with a dwell period for each complete revolution of the input shaft 1. In the alternative embodiments of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) a similar one complete revolution of the input shaft effects 180 and 90 degree rotational movement respectively of the output shaft 5 whereby the output shaft 5 is indexed 180 or 90 degrees respectively with a following dwell period for each complete revolution of the input shaft 1. The stepping arrangement is used with an electromagnetic clutch/brake combination 22-26 (Fig. 6) whereby the clutch 22-25 is energized, i.e. engaged during the stepped index drive and the brake 22-23 is energized, i.e. engaged during the dwell period.
