Abstract

1495389 Generating time reference signals UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 22 Jan 1975 [31 Jan 1974] 04665/74 Heading H3P A time reference signal is generated, from a pulse, Fig. 1 (not shown) comprising a packet of electrical oscillations, by detecting the first negative-to-positive zero crossing of the packet waveform succeeding a negative excursion whose peak value has exceeded a reference value (26, Fig. 1), circuitry, Figs. 2(B), 4 (not shown) being provided to ensure that the time reference signal is not utilized unless the integrated area of all negative excursions of the packet, representing packet amplitude, exceeds a predetermined limit set to ensure that a utilized time reference signal is produced at the first negative-to-positive zero crossing of the packet waveform. The packet waveform is amplified at 22, an automatic gain control comprising output amplitude detector 29 and comparator 31 with reference input VR tending to keep the average output level, for a plurality of received packets, constant, strobe 25 ensuring that the circuitry is active only for a time period embracing the expected arrival time of each packet. The negative-going excursions are integrated by network (34, Fig. 2(B)), whose time constant substantially exceeds the duration of one packet, but is less than the inter-packet duration, the integrator output, should it exceed a pre-set value for any one packet, operating trigger (35) to enable use of the timing signal generated by the packet. The packet is produced by a transducer receiving an ultrasonic pulse from a transmitter (not shown), the transit time in each of two opposed directions along the same path in a fluid being determined, the time difference representing the path direction component of fluid velocity, see Specification 1,422,791, only packets which have operated the trigger (35) being utilized in the measurement, AND gates (48, 49, Fig. 4) inhibiting use of the weaker ones.
