1495018 Packaging articles in layers DUFAYLITE DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 8 Oct 1975 [31 Oct 1974 3 Jan 1975] 47131/74 and 164/75 Heading B8C A method of packaging articles in layers in a box open at the top comprises loading the articles upon a series of separators to form a layer of articles on each separator while the separator is supported on flaps 8 above the box, and removing the flaps 8 so that the separator descends into the box with the air beneath cushioning the fall. A box locator 3 pivotally supports the flaps and can be manually pushed on rails 2 beneath feed tray 4. As the locator is pulled from beneath the tray fruit is allowed to drop on to a separator consisting of a sheet of corrugated cardboard, chipboard, or kraft paper with a divider of structural honeycomb material on top. Alternatively a vacuum moulded plastics or pulp separator may be used. The box can be raised in the locator during the filling of all but the last layers by a rod 19 controlled by a ratchet 20. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown) the flaps 8 are mounted on the inside of a liner of the box locator with the top of the box being initially raised between the liner and the outside of the locator to above the level of the flaps. Alternatively each separator may be loaded and then brought over the top of the box and dropped therein.
