Abstract

1494909 Esters of maleinized fatty acids DULUX AUSTRALIA Ltd 11 Dec 1974 [11 Dec 1973] 53546/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises an ester derivative of a maleinized autoxidizable monocarboxylic fatty acid, the maleinized fatty acid comprising 1 mol. of maleic anhydride per mol. of monocarboxylic fatty acid, the derivative containing both carboxyl and hydroxyl groups and having an acid value of 40-100 mg KOH/g., the derivative comprising (1) a mono-ester moiety obtained by reacting reactive groups in the maleinized fatty acid with a diol which is 2,2- bis(4-hydroxy cyclohexyl) propane or the reaction product of 1 mol. of 2,2-bis-(p-hydroxy phenyl) propane with 2 mol. of ethylene, propylene or butylene oxide, and also (2) a monoester moiety obtained by reacting reactive groups in the maleinized fatty acid with ethylene, propylene or butylene oxide or of a compound of the formula where x, y and z which may be the same or different within the one molecule, are integers and x + y + z = 4-6 inclusive. Suitable autoxidizable acids are linseed, safflower, soya, sunflower, dehydrated castor or tung oil fatty acids. The derivatives may be prepared by reacting one mole of the acid with one mole maleic anhydride to form the adduct, reacting one of the specified diols and then reacting the product with one of the specified oxides. The derivatives may be used with crosslinking agents in components of coating compositions.
