Abstract
1494705 Fluid-pressure servomotor systems PLESSEY CO Ltd 30 Jan 1976 [18 Feb 1975] 6738/75 Heading G3P A valve device in a vehicle engine cooling system comprises an orifice 6 whose flow area is controlled by a closure member 8 in dependence on the expansion and contraction of a sensor 4 responsive to the temperature of a fluid external to the valve device, an orifice 16 which is opened or closed by a sensor 18 responsive to fluidpressure in the valve device, and a spool valve 24 which is in a first position, in which fluid in the cooling system does not pass through the valve device, when the orifices 6, 16 are closed, and is in a second position, in which fluid from the system does flow through the device, when one or both of the orifices 6, 16 is open. The temperature sensor 4 is a wax element carrying a tapered spigot 8 which is urged to return on contraction of the wax element by a spring 14. The device is described for controlling the flow of fluid from a pump (passage 34) to a hydraulically-driven engine cooling fan (passage 62). When the engine temperature is above a given value and the pressure in the valve device is normal both orifices 6, 16 are closed and spool 24 is biased by spring 46 to shut off fluid gallery 30. Should the engine temperature fall, or the pressure in the device exceed a safe value, the appropriate one of the orifices 6 or 16 will be opened, the pressure above web 26 will fall and the spool 24 will be moved to allow fluid from the pump to pass via ports 28, the gallery 30 and either passages 68, 72, 66 or passage 74 to tank.
