Abstract
1494561 Laser rangefinder obstacle detector ELTRO GmbH GES FUR STRAHLUNGS TECHNIK 20 Jan 1975 [19 Jan 1974] 2300/75 Heading H4D A method of detecting an obstacle to a low flying aircraft carrying a laser transmitter/receiver comprises; transmitting a beam of successive laser pulses, causing the beam to scan ahead of the aircraft according to a conical scan pattern having an apical angle which is varied during the scanning operation and causing the receiver to scan ahead of the aircraft according to the same pattern so as to detected reflected laser pulses. As described, the received pulsed laser signals are displayed on a screen situated in the pilot's field of vision, e.g. C.R.T., Fig. 1 (or Fig. 2, not shown) in spiral form, when conical variation is continuous or in concentric circular form when conical variation is stepwise whereby an obstacle such as cables 4 are displayed by perceptible dot pattern 2 on screen 1. The range of the detected obstacle is detected and displayed adjacently at 8 in known manner. The rangefinder apparatus (Fig. 4) comprises laser 7, transmitting a pulsed beam along axis 1 via prisms 6A-6D through central window 3 in the receiver objective lens 2. Reflections from a target are focused by lens 2 via angled mirror 4 on to detector 5. Scanning is effected by tilting part of the optical apparatus comprising lens 2, mirror, prisms 6C and 6D about axis 9 while the whole optical apparatus is rotated about axis 1. Spiral scanning is effected by a continuous progressive tilting and fast return to the starting position using a ramp control voltage (Fig. 6, not shown) and concentric scanning using a step control voltage (Fig. 7, not shown). The spiral may be formed by a single outward scan and fast return to the optical axis of the beam on a series of a plurality of secondary spiral or concentric scan patterns may be performed, superimposed on the main conical scan, wherein the apical angle variation of the conical scan for each secondary scan pattern is small compared to that of the main scan.
