1493996 4-Siloxy polyalkylpiperidines; stabilizing polymers CIBA-GEIGY AG 14 May 1976 [28 May 1975] 23351/75 Headings C3S and C3P Novel 4-siloxy polyalkylpiperidines have the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a C 2-6 alkyl radical, R<SP>2</SP> is a C 1-6 alkyl radical, R<SP>3</SP> is a C 1-9 alkyl, phenyl, benzyl or phenylethyl radical, R<SP>4</SP> is a C 1-6 alkyl radical, or R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> together form part of a cyclopentyl or cyclohexyl radical, R<SP>5</SP> is a C 1-5 alkyl, C 3-4 alkenyl or alkinyl, or C 7-8 aralkyl radical, R<SP>6</SP> is as R<SP>5</SP> or one of R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> may be H, R<SP>7</SP> is H, Me, Ph or Vi, R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> are as R<SP>7</SP> or are C 1-8 alkoxy, C 3-10 alkoxyalkoxy, cyclohexyloxy, C 7-8 aralkoxy, phenoxy, chlorophenoxy, C 1-4 alkylphenoxy or C 1-4 alkoxyphenoxy, or a substituted piperidyloxy radical as above, or when R<SP>8</SP> is H, Me, Ph or Vi, R<SP>9</SP> may be [OSiR<SP>7</SP>R<SP>8</SP>] 1-0 -O- piperidyl (as above), and X is H, an oxide radical, a C 1-12 alkyl, C 3-8 alkenyl, C 2-14 alkoxyalkyl, C 7-8 aralkyl, C 1-4 acyl, -CH 2 -COOR<SP>10</SP>, CH 2 -CHR<SP>11</SP>-OR<SP>12</SP> or a -COOR<SP>13</SP> radical (where R<SP>10</SP> is a C 1-8 alkyl, C 3-6 alkenyl, phenyl, C 7-8 aralkyl or cyclohexyl radical; R<SP>11</SP> is H, Me or Ph; R<SP>12</SP> is H or a C 1-18 aliphatic, aromatic, araliphatic or alicyclic acyl radical in which any aromatic ring may be chlorine-, C 1-4 alkyl-, C 1-8 alkoxy- and/or hydroxy-substituted; and R<SP>13</SP> is a C 1-8 alkyl, benzyl, phenyl or cyclohexyl radical). They may be prepared from the corresponding 4-hydroxy polyalkylpiperidines and a reactive silane. In Examples 1-4 2 : 6- diethyl-2:3:6-trimethyl-4-hydroxypiperidine is reacted with Me 2 SiCl 2 , Ph 2 SiCl 2 , Ph 3 SiCl or Me 3 SiCl in dioxan at 60‹ C.; in Example 5 the 2 :6-diethyl-2:3:5:6-tetramethyl compound is used with Me 3 SiCl. In Example 6 the product of Example 4 is oxidized with 3-chloroperbenzoic acid to the N-oxide. In Example 7 the products of Examples 1, 2 and 3 are used to stabilize polypropylene, in conjunction with octadecyl beta-(3:5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate. Uses: light stabilization of numerous listed addition and condensation polymers.
