Abstract

1493946 Swaging, tube expanding, making fuel injectors ROLLS-ROYCE MOTORS Ltd 24 Sept 1975 [12 Nov 1974] 48803/74 Headings B3H B3J and B3A A tool for swaging a metal sleeve, e.g. a copper sleeve for a nozzle of a fuel injector in a bore, e.g. in a diesel engine cylinder head 1 comprises a cylindrical portion 9 at its head end and alternate spherical and cylindrical portions 7, 8, the portions 7 being of greater diameter than the portions 8 and the diameter of successive portions 7 being equal or increasing away from the head end. The sleeve is externally shaped so as to fit loosely in portions 2a, 2b of the bore 2 and the tool 5 is pushed through to swage the material of the sleeve 4 against the wall of the bore 2b. The tool has a handle 5a and it comprises alternate cylindrical and part spherical portions 6, 7, the diameter of the part spherical portions 7 increasing from the head end of the tool except for the portion nearest the handle 5 which is of the same diameter as the adjacent portion. After swaging the tool 5 drops out of the handle 5a at the bottom of the bore 2. Subsequently a rolling tool 10 is inserted in the sleeve, the tool comprising three equiangularly disposed rollers 13 in a cage 12 surrounding a tapered shaft 11, which has a tommy bar 15 at its upper end. Pushing down and rotating the tommy bar moves the rollers 13 into contact with the surrounding sleeve to deform it into water tight contact with the wall of the bore 2. If required the swaging and rolling tools may be combined to perform simultaneous swaging and rolling.
