Abstract

1493351 Drying sludge J C SOLLINGER 25 Nov 1974 [3 Sept 1973] 41344/73 Heading F4G The invention relates to a method of and appatatus for drying and sterilizing wet sludge. The apparatus comprises a rotatable kiln 10 having a material inlet end 16 and a material outlet end 18 and along the length thereof a plurality of different agitating devices for controlling the drying of the material. High temperature non-combustible gas is passed through the kiln from the inlet end to the outlet end thereof. The length of the kiln is divided into a plurality of zones by the form of agitating device in each of the zones. The zones are a material reception zone, a transition zone, a granulating zone, a pelletizing zone and a winnowing zone. The agitating device in the reception zone comprises a plurality of linkage 24 formed by chains loosely looped in the zone, the chains when the kiln is rotated pulling the material dumped thereon when the linkages are at the lowest position of the drum in its rotation away from the sides of the kiln and also breaking it into pieces (Fig. 3, not shown). In the transition zone linkage also in the form of chains is used in combination with lifting vanes 34 which are radially extending at their outer ends and angled in the direction of the kiln rotation at their inner ends (Fig. 4, not shown), these vanes without chains passing through the granulating zone. Further vanes 34 telescopically cooperate with the first mentioned vanes 34 such that the length of the granulating zone may be varied (Figs. 5, 10, not shown). The pelletizing zone merely comprises the smooth inner surface of the kiln. The drying gas when it has reached the pelletizing zone has been cooled and the relative humidity is high. Thus the material in the pelletizing zone is moistened such that pelletization takes place. The kiln at the pelletizing zone may be provided with external cooling fins (Fig. 6, not shown). In the winnowing zone lifting vanes of L-shaped section are used, two sets thereof being telescopically cooperable such that the length of the zone may be varied (Fig. 8, not shown). The kiln is rotated at from 2-4 r.p.m. by drive rollers (Fig. 8, not shown). Alternatively the kiln may be mounted on rollers and driven through a gear train by a motor, the gear train meshing with a gear surrounding the kiln (Fig. 9, not shown).
