Abstract

1493348 Shaping sheet material F T PROJECTS Ltd 30 Jan 1975 [30 Oct 1973] 50367/73 Headings B5A and B5N A surface of heat fusible plastics material is shaped by contact with a second surface or is united with the second surface by placing the surfaces together, confining the assembly within a collapsible airtight enclosure and reducing the pressure therewithin causing the surfaces to be pressed together and, during such pressing, softening the plastics material by high frequency heating. A thermoplastic sheet 2, Fig. 2, to be embossed, is placed adjacent a shaping die 4 and the assembly positioned within a vacuum bag 16 located between high frequency electrodes 18, 20. In a modification one electrode is of at least the same area as the die and is stationary whereas the other electrode is relatively small and traverses the length of the die; alternatively two relatively small electrodes may traverse the die or the assembly may move relative the electrodes. The latter may be placed side-by-side above or below the assembly. In Fig. 7 a metal plate 42 is positioned adjacent the die 4 and the sheet and die assembly is carried by a conveyer 36 past an earthed electrode 44 and an electrode 46 with a brush-like extension 48 of low loss material. Each sheet 2 may be replaced by two or more sheets which are fused together simultaneously with the embossing; reinforcing inserts may be placed between the sheets. The embossing dies may impart a shape to the work as well as to emboss it.
