Abstract

1493127 Polyurea/silica xerosols BAYER AG 27 Nov 1974 [30 Nov 1973] 51300/74 Addition to 1385605 Heading C3R A polymer/silica xerosol is obtained by mixing (a) an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution or silica solution with (b) a polyisocyanate of M.W. not less than 250 and containing at least one polar nonionic group which has been introduced by reaction of a polyisocyanate with a halogen, a hydrogen halide, urea, dimethylurea, thiourea, methylthiourea, guanidine, cyanamide, hydrazine, formamide, acetamide, sulphamide, dimethyl phosphite, diethyl phosphite, chloroacetamide, dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, oxalic acid, acrylic acid, furfuryl alcohol, or a compound X-R-Y, wherein R is C 1-6 alkylene, cyclohexylene, phenylene or methylenephenylene; X is -OH, -COOH, -SH, -NHR<SP>1</SP> or -NH 2 , and Y may be H if X is -OH or -COOH, or is -OR<SP>1</SP>, -COOR<SP>1</SP>, -SO 2 R<SP>1</SP>, -OSO 2 R<SP>1</SP>, -NO 2 , -P(OR<SP>11</SP>) 2 , -OP(OR<SP>11</SP>) 2 , -Cl, -Br, R<SP>1</SP> being -CH 3 , -C 2 H 3 , -C 4 H 9 , -C 6 H 5 , -CO-NH 2 or -CO-CH 3 , and R<SP>11</SP> being C 1-10 alkyl, C 6-10 aryl or C 5-10 cycoalkyl. This is a modification of parent Specification in which component (b) is a prepolymer containing ionic groups. Preferably (a) contains 32-54 wt. per cent solids, and the weight ratio of (b) : (a) is 7 : 3 to 2 : 8. The preparations are described of components (b) from a crude polymethylene polyphenylene polyisocyanate of reduced dimer content and (i) 3-9 wt. per cent of phenylacetic acid, 4-methylbenzoic acid, benzoic acid, hexahydrobenzoic acid, urea sulphamide, 3-ethyl-3-hydroxymethyl-oxetane, ethylene glycol methyl, ethyl and butyl ethers, furfuryl alcohol, butyl glycolate, benzyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, methanol, n-hexanol and diethyl phosphite; or (ii) chlorine gas introduced over 0À3-13 hours at 150‹ C. under UV; or (iii) HCl or HBr at 100‹ C. In the examples first components, containing 50-200 p.b.w. of these, optionally with 30-150 p.b.w. of unmodified or sulphonated polyisocyanate, 20-25 p.b.w. of CCl 3 F (omitted in Examples 24-33 and 39 in which the products are non-foamed solids) and optionally 100 p.b.w. of cement, are mixed with second components containing 150 p.b.w. of 44% sodium silicate, 0À2-1 p.b.w. of emulsifier and 1-2 p.b.w. Et 3 N or 5 p.b.w. tris(dimethylaminopropyl) triazine.
