Abstract

Couplings, non-automatic.-In a non-automatic coupling for railway carriages, the hook is free to move in a horizontal plane, and is enclosed in a cage through which a transverse shaft, accessible from the side of the vehicle, actuates through gearing, the link of the hook. The coupling rod a has a hook t on one side of the head and an inclined surface r on the other. Two superposed holes, the upper one 3 being shown, connect the steam and air services respectively through the medium of the slide n when the coupling is connected up. The link o has one end closed to form a stem and is connected together with the bell crank lever u, to the end of the slide n. To connect the opposing halves of either handwheel k, this forward movement slides the link o up the incline r against the pressure of the leaf spring s and opens it in a horizontal plane. The forward movement of the slide tilts the bell crank lever u and retains the hook w in the open position and at the same time shuts off the steam and air ports in the rod. On reversing the handwheel k the slide is drawn back, the link o drops into the opposing hook t, the hook w engages the eye of the bracket z on the opposing half of the casing b and the steam and air passages put in open circuit respectively through the medium of the ports in the slide valve.
