Abstract
1492391 Spot-type disc brakes; slack adjusting GIRLING Ltd 16 Jan 1975 [31 Jan 1974 25 June 1974] 04519/74 Heading F2E A mechanical actuator for a vehicle brake comprises two relatively-rotatable cam components 17, 18, each having a respective helical cam track 25 or 24, the cam tracks being complementary to one another and axially confronting one another, and a plurality of rolling members between the two cam tracks to form a helical thrust bearing 23, so that rotation of one of the cam components 17, 18, in an appropriate direction relative to the other effects axial displacement of that component relative to the other. As shown, for actuation, cam component 17 is rotated clockwise, Fig. 2, by cable 28 so that it moves leftwards, Fig. 1, thereby applying pad assembly 14 via nut, screw and tappet members 20, 22, 26. Pad assembly 15 is applied by sliding-caliper reaction. A return spring 46 is provided. Slack adjustment takes place automatically, when appropriate, through annular member 36, 37, the outer of which is rotated in the early phase of brake application by a key 38 secured in cam component 17 and the inner of which rotates nut member 20 on screw member 22 at non-reversible screw connection 21 via a one-way clutch 44. Annular members 36, 37, normally have a spring- loaded clutch connection at friction surfaces 39, 40, but this slips when connection 21 is subjected to axial (braking) load, so spurious adjustment due to deflection of caliper 10 under heavy brake application cannot occur. The one-way clutch 44 ensures that nut 20 is not turned back with annular members 36, 37, on brake release. (Pad assembly 15 is applied by sliding- caliper reaction. In Fig. 5 (not shown), annular members 37, 36 are replaced respectively by a drive ring (52) having a multistart reversible screw-thread connection (53) with the nut member 20 and a non-rotatable container member (51) having a spring-loaded slippable clutch connection (54, 55) with the drive ring. Axial clearance at connection (53) permits normal brake-applying displacement of nut 20, connection (53) causes rotation of nut 20 when adjustment is required, and connection (53) causes rotation of drive ring (52) without reverse rotation of nut 20 on brake release when clutch connection (54, 55) is relieved of spring pressure.
