Abstract

1492341 Consolidating earth formations; propping fractures HALLIBURTON CO 25 Feb 1976 7467/76 Heading E1F A method of forming a permeable solid mass in a subterranean formation comprises depositing in the formation a dispersion of particulate solids and a resin composition in a carrier liquid, the particulate solid material being comprised of a mixture of inert solids wich are coated by the resin composition and solids which are not coated by the resin composition wherein the uncoated solids are solid particles comprised of a homogenous mixture of a hydrocarbon wax and a polymer and are insoluble in the carrier liquid at ambient temperature; causing the resin composition to harden; and dissolving the uncoated solids. The dispersion is formed by introducing the particulate solids into a dispersion of the resin composition in the carrier liquid and is deposited between a gravel packing solids retainer and the formation or in a fracture for use as a propping agent. Preferably the resin composition is a urea-formaldehyde resin, an epoxy resin, a melamine resin a phenol-formaldehyde resin, a polyurethane resin, a polyester resin or a furfural alcohol resin; the carrier liquid is a liquid hydrocarbon e.g. diesel oil; the inert solids are sand particles; and the polymer of the uncoated solids is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate or of ethylene and ethyl acetate. The uncoated solids may be present in an amount of from 1-30% by weight of the particulate solid material.
