Abstract

1492059 1,5-Dimethylcyclooctene SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 17 Nov 1975 [18 Nov 1974] 49796/74 Heading C5E 1,5-Dimethylcyclooctene is prepared by (a) isomerizing a mixture of 1,5- and 2,6-dimethylcycloocta-1,5-dienes in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal on an alumina carrier to give a mixture of conjugated cyclodienes and either (b) selectively hydrogenating this mixture in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal on an alumina carrier, or (c) separating the isomers 1,5- and 2,6-dimethylcycloocta-1,3- dienes from the isomerized mixture and selectively hydrogenating these isomers in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst. Steps (a) and (b) may be carried out together. The separation in (c) may be by distillation and the hydrogenation catalyst may be a palladium catalyst.
