Abstract
1491198 Catalytic element for I.C. exhaust conversion UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 25 Oct 1974 [8 Nov 1973] 51975/73 Heading B1F [Also in Division B3] A catalyst body having channels extending therethrough comprises a stack of corrugated sheets, one or more of which is provided with protuberances 4 which prevent the crests 2 of one sheet nesting in the valleys 3 of an adjacent sheet. In one embodiment, a strip is formed with transverse or longitudinal corrugations and is pierced to form one or more tabs 4 on one of the flanks of each corrugation or on each flank of alternate corrugations. The formed strip is wound into a coil (Figure 7, not shown) or folded in a zig-zag manner to form a stack of layers, Fig. 5, the tabs 4 preventing the layers from nesting. The stack so formed is encased in a can. The layers of the stack may alternatively be formed from separate sheets and alternate layers need not, be provided with tabs 4 (Figure 6, not shown). The stack may be wound to form a coil. At least one of the layers may be perforated and may be of metal e.g. oxidised aluminium bearing ferritic steel coated with platinum or palladium. The body is used for purifying the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine.
