Abstract
1491069 Heart pacers ARCO MEDICAL PRODUCTS CO 6 June 1975 [10 June 1974 2 May 1975] 24462/75 Heading ASR A cardiac pacer 210 consists of a titanium casing 230 hermetically sealing the interior of the casing from body fluids in the cavity in which the pacer is implanted, the casing being less than 20mm thick and each other orthogonal dimension being less than 60mm, and at least two lithium-thionyl chloride batteries 260, 261 connected in parallel in the casing, said batteries generating no gas and supplying a voltage of at least 3.3 V for an expected life of more than five years to oscillator circuitry 250 consisting of complementary metal oxide semi conductor devices controlling electrical pulses which are transmitted to a socket 234 in the casing and thence by an electrical lead to the heart of a patient, the casing, batteries, socket, and circuitry together having a weight less than 100gm and a specific gravity less than 1.7, whereby it is stated that changes in acceleration or deceleration of the patient's body impart only tolerable forces to tissue adjacent the pacer implant cavity. The batteries are positioned in a hermetically sealed chamber 233 separate from a hermetically sealed chamber 232 containing the circuitry, there being a plurality of electrical connectors between said chambers. The socket 234 is anchored in a moulded organic polymeric shield 235 containing a wire 236 which transmits signals from circuitry 250 to the socket. The positive poles of the batteries are grounded to the pacer casing. The voltager of the batteries diminishes significantly only during the terminal period of the useful life of the batteries whereby battery depletion is detectable.
