Abstract

1490428 Radiation curable inks M & T CHEMICALS Inc 22 Aug 1975 [23 Aug 1974] 35017/75 Heading C3P Radiation curable decorating inks, particularly useful for application to metal substrates, comprise an acrylic monomer or oligomer, a photoreactive resin containing a group which produces free radicals when irradiated with ultra violet radiation, a photoinitiator, a free radical inhibitor, and a pigment. The acrylic component may be, for example, 1,6- hexane diol diacrylate or a reaction product of toluene diisocyanate, pentaerythritol triacrylate and an alcohol selected from 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, oleyl alcohol, octyl alcohol, C 12 -C 14 alcohols, benzyl alcohol and furfuryl alcohol. The photo reactive resin exemplified is the reaction product of o-benzoylbenzoic acid and expoxidized oil. Preferred photoinitiators are benzophenone, Michler's ketone and mixtures thereof. Accelerators, fillers and waxes may optionally be included in the compositions. The presence of the photoreactive resin improves the curing rate of the ink.
