1490138 Preparing phosphorothioates and phenylphosphonothioates DOW CHEMICAL CO 4 Aug 1975 32548/75 Heading C2P A process for the preparation of a phosphorothioate or phenylphosphonothioate of formula RO-P(S)(OR 1 )(R 2 ) or where R 1 is alkyl; R 2 is alkyl or phenyl; R is a 6-membered carbocyclic or heterocyclic aromatic radical optionally substituted by up to 3 substituents from hal, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulphinyl, CN or NO 2 , but not more than one alkylthio, alkylsulphinyl or NO 2 group, comprises reacting a chlorophosphorus compound of formula (R 1 O)(R 2 )P(S)-Cl with a salt of formula RO-M or in which M is an alkali metal in the presence of (a) a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt containing at least 5 C atoms and having a solubility of at least 1% in the liquid reaction medium at 25‹ C. and (b) a tertiary amine. Preferred for (a) are benzyltrimethylammonium and benzyltriethylammonium chlorides and tetrabutylammonium chloride or bromide. Preferred for (b) are quinuclidine, trimethylamine, N - methylpyrrolidine, 4 - picoline, tributylamine, dimethylaniline, N - methylmorpholine, tetramethylethylenediamine, benzyldimethylamine, triphenylamine, 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane, 1 - methylimidazole and 4 - dimethylaminopyridine. Preferred heterocyclic radicals R are pyridine, pyrazine and pyrimidine radicals.
