Abstract
1490120 Grinding M M WARD 6 Aug 1976 [8 May 1975] 19489/75 Heading B3D A machine for grinding a helical groove in a workpiece, such as a taper reamer, taper die sinker cutter, comprises a rotatable spindle for supporting the workpiece for rotation about its axis, means 4 for supporting a grinding wheel 5, means 3 for effecting rectilinear translation of the spindle with respect to the grinding wheel, and means for rotating the spindle concurrently with the rectilinear translation including a guide member 13 having an arcuate surface and a follower 16 connected to the spindle and arranged to travel along the surface during the translation. The spindle is rotatably mounted in a structure 7 rigidly supported on a worktable 7 reciprocatable on a bed 1 of the machine by a hand wheel 3 or hydraulic "creep" feed drive to carry the workpiece mounted in a chuck 9 on the spindle past the grinding wheel 5 carried by a mounting 4 on the bed, the axis of the spindle being contained in the vertical plane containing the direction of movement of the worktable. A pinion on the spindle meshes with a rack formed on a crossbar 10 mounted in a slideway in the head 7. The end of the crossbar has a ball and socket connection with the follower 16 which has rollers 17 engaging each side of the arcuate guide member 13 which may be in the form of a sine bar and mounted on a support plate 14 pivotally adjustable on a support 15 of the bed 1. In use, the sine bar is set with a tangent of its midpoint at 45 degrees to the direction of movement of the worktable and the workpiece is set with its axis at an angle to the direction of movement of the table somewhat less than half the cone angle of the workpiece. As the workpiece is moved by the worktable, the rate of rotation imparted to the workpiece by the sine bar decreases, the helix formed on the workpiece having a substantially constant helix angle along its length. In another embodiment, the guide member is in the form of an arcuate slot.
