Abstract

1489835 Navigation device J M WRIGHT 22 March 1976 [22 March 1975] 12049/75 Heading G1X A navigation aid comprises a base plate 10 having thereon a grid of two intersecting sets of parallel lines being scales representing velocity, distance or time, and a transparent member 15 rotatably mounted on the base plate and having a circular scale 18 at a radius from the centre of rotation. The sets of parallel lines interact at a predetermined angle, e.g. 100‹, corresponding to an assumed 5‹ leeway and comprise a time scale 25, a distance or speed scale 26, and a speed scale 27; starboard and port tack markers 20, 21 are provided as is a third mark 22 diametrically opposite the mark 20. The circular disc is rotatively secured at the centre 16 and is calibrated in degrees around its circumference and with a radial line 28; the surface of the disc is roughened so that pencil markings can be made on it. Examples of use are given where vectors representing e.g. tidal current, ship's speed, drift and leeway, are drawn on the disc and compounded with the scales 25, 26, 27 to calculate e.g. course to set, distance travelled and dead reckoning position. The base plate 10 may comprise two overlying pieces each with set of parallel lines variable in relative position to provide different inclinations for differing values of leeway.
